How to Flip Out of a Bad Mood
How to Flip Out of a Bad Mood
When was the last time you found yourself mucking around in the shallows of a bad mood? A few minutes ago? Yesterday? Perhaps as you are reading this article, you are in one right now. You are going to learn a simple 3 step process to easily and naturally flip yourself out of a bad mood.
Either way, we are all too familiar with a mood that has gone bad and along with it, our behavior.
I grew up in Long Island and we lived by the water. When the tide would go out, the mud would appear…everywhere. Some boats would actually rest on the mud. Because of my curiosity, I would venture out into the mud to see what it felt like. One time I got stuck and couldn’t move and my sister had to come help pull me out. When she grabbed my hand I pulled her down into the mud with me and we both struggled to get out. The more we wallowed in the mud, the deeper we sank into it.
A bad mood is the same way. The more you wallow in it, the deeper you sink and it’s easy to take other people down with you. One high tide lifts all ships (JFK) AND one low tide takes all the ships down.
There is plenty of mud slinging going on these days and it’s easy to get stuck in it, creating and reinforcing a bad mood. Before you can overcome an undesirable state of being, it’s important to get some clarity around what it is you wish to get free from. Let’s take a closer look. What is a mood anyway?
A mood is defined as a temporary state of mind or feeling. Key word here istemporary. An angry, irritable or sullen state of mind. Notice that the word mind is a key component to your mood. It all begins between your two earsAND it will last as long as you allow it to last.
Below is a 3 step process to help you flip out of your next bad mood:
- Confess it ASAP:”My name is Lauren and I’m in a bad mood.”Whatever you expose to the light of your awareness becomes visible and is not bumping around in the dark shadows of your mind. Everything that is illuminated becomes light (Ephesians 5:13).
- Reflect:When was the last time you felt in agoodmood? What thought gave access to the negative mood? Did someone get something you wanted and you felt overlooked? Perhaps your expectations exceeded reality? Are you in the HALTS: Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired…or Sick? Get a full model of reality…ask:What’s going on here that triggered a bad mood?Be your own detective, hunt and gather the pieces of information that triggered your bad mood. The more you know, the more empowered you will become to step away from a temporary negative state of mind. Just because you feel irritable does not mean you need to stay there. Don’t let your mood be the boss of you and rob you of the joy that is available to you through a renewed state of mind (Romans 12:1-2). Pick up your mental camp site and move on to better ground.
- Resurrect Positive Thoughts:Use a simple yet powerful NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) technique: The More/The More: State yourundesirablestate of mind and link it to your desired state of mind and being. For example:“The more this bad mood takes over my behavior, THE MORE I am able to tune into positive thoughts and choose a positive forward action step.” or “The more irritable I feel, The more peaceful I become.”The brain will follow the associations YOU make.
Too often you give free rent to a negative mood and serve it with your time, attention and behavior all day long as you forget that it is TEMPORARY…how long it lasts is up to you.
What would it take for you to take back the power you give to your negative moods and create intentional positive thinking and behavior in your day today? What do you want to remember ahead of time when a negative mood starts raining on your picnic?
As Dr. Amen says the ANTS will ruin the best picnics in life. An ANT is an automatic negative thought. Use the ANT repellant of intentional positive thinking quicker today than yesterday.
Wake up mentally and train your brain to think the thoughts that lead to more open doors, options and opportunities to make a positive impact in this world.
