Coaching Question:Where in my life do I want to course correct when it comes to my emotional responses to others? I want to do more of this___________ and less of that_________________. Write it down and carry it with you this week.

A Stress Solution for Your Soul:

Our sense of inner peace lies in our ability to discern and manage our emotions and behaviors in a way that honors God which supports the highest version of ourselves: LIGHTS ON vs LIGHTS OFF (Lights On Leadership).

Where were your lights knocked out this week? Perhaps someone said something that triggered you into self-doubt or worry? Maybe you saw someone get picked over you for something you wanted or someone got in your way on the road. Today is an invitation to wake up and become aware of what is sucking the life out of you. Negative emotions create a cascade of neuro-chemicals within the body that over time create disease. 75-90% of all doctor visits are stress related ailments and conditions.

When we live from the outside in vs the inside out, we get hijacked by our circumstances and situations around us. When you experience a life-threatening event, the brain does something miraculous, instantly everything you were giving free rent to, in terms of non-essential stress triggers, instantly vanish in light of your drive to survive or help someone you love survive. There is a lesson in this experience. What’s truly important to you overrides all of the “airspace” you give over to the trinkets that you allow to steal your peace and focus in life.

I almost lost my husband four weeks ago to a major heart attack which I have come to find out only 12 % survive. It was an instant clearing out of non-essential negative thoughts that I was giving free rent to on a daily basis. In the previous blog we explored a negativity detox. Another way of saying that is acomplaining fast. If you have not already given that a go then this is your week to explore the benefits.

See how long you can go without complaining this week. When you feel the urge to complain about something, pause and think of an opposing positive perspective thought:

  • Instead of complaining about the traffic think about those people who have to walk miles to get to their desired destination and would love to have a car to sit in traffic.
  • Before you entertain thoughts that fuel frustration around the amount of time you have to wait in a line at the grocery store think about the people in the world who wait for hours to get a small portion of food.
  • When you feel the urge to complain about the behavior of those you love, think for a moment what your life would be like without them.
  • If you can’t sleep at night use the time to pray for those who don’t have a bed to sleep in.

TAKE ACTION:

“The imagination is a preview of what’s to come.” Einstein. Whatever you focus on GROWS BIGGER (takes up more landscape between your two ears).

When you give your mind over to the Holy Spirit, you are given divine assistance to override negativity. You have the God given ability to take every thought captive to think like Jesus thinks. When you feel that uncomfortable urge that pushes you to verbalize complaints, pause for a moment and flip it into a prayer for others. Jesus invites us to love each other and shared that we find our lives when we lose them (stop thinking about ourselves). Happiness returns when we lose our self-focus in light of behavior that helps those around us. Perhaps that help is in the form of a prayer for others rather than complain.
